"Welfair" the thoughful use of air for higher welfare

Trust our 28 years of experience to protect your cows and their calfs.

Magdek Thermal Systems operates from 2 UK bases- Lisburn and Welshpool. Over 35 years expertise supplying farm ventilation systems.

Use our extensive experience in agriculture, supplying thousands of successful ventilation systems to British, Irish and European farms. Call for advice or to request one of our farmer friendly visits where we can offer practical choices to difficult animal welfare challenges.

Primarily dedicated to the dairy industry, we are lead by Eleanor Lewis one of the UKs first Dairy Initiative trained consultants and Derek Morgan with more experience of farm practical ventilation solutions than any other UK or Irish engineer.

Positive pressure tube ventilation (PPTV)

If someone has doubts about the benefits of ventilation and fresh air talk to any recognised university agri-research department or successful livestock  business.
Fresh air and good health go hand in hand.
How much fresh air is needed is the question?
Air change or the volume of air that a space occupies and the number of times it should be changed each hour are critical.
All mammals have upper and lower critical temperatures.
UCT and LCT vary with age and you need to be aware of them.
Animals are also prone to the physiological effects of humidity- remember trying to work on a muggy day in summer?
Relative humidity or rH should be considered when responding to temperature changes.
So UCT, temperature, LCT, rH. Get our expertise on board
And while we are there ask about drainage, bedding, feed and water location, hygiene and testing to trace the source of challenges in early weeks.

Vectored air for cow cooling, (Cyclone VHV)

Air change is good at 4 times per hour through winter months, but as the temperatures start to climb above 12C in a production shed 4ACH is often not enough. When the ambient temperature is 18C a dairy cow is already reducing feed intake, directly impacting milk yield.
Research in the US, UK and Sweden has clearly demonstrated that air velocity over the cow in its bed  becomes critical. Air velocity well over 1m/s is essential to maintaining rumination against rising temperature or humidity. But how do you cool a resting cow on a lime/sawdust covered matt without lifting bedding or creating a dust storm?
Cyclone Fans from Topcool are designed to cool animals in their beds without upsetting bedding. delivering velocities from 0-12m/s, the Cyclone is the only fan designed purely for cow welfair. And in winter at their airchange setting, the Cyclone will give you 4 steady airchanges at only 20% of their summer operating power. Available in 36", 55", 72" and 84" to suit any shed heights and bed runs.
Topcool Cyclones are also available in
 IE3 high efficiency versions,
IE5  direct drive with on board speed management.

Practical control panels for 1 and 3 phase fan motors.

Power consumption and intelligent control is a major part of all our designs on farm. All motors should be automatically modulating to meet demand. You dont leave a tractor in the yard with the accelerator pedal pushed hard to the floor. Its exactly the same with fan motors. The type of motor is important too.  An IE4 motor has 40% less losses than an IE2- pay the extra. An IE5 motor is direct drive without interference across the whole speed range. It will not interfere with data capture sensors on sorting gates.
Magdek only supply control systems that offer the most cost effective outcome on farms. They are all automatically controllable and are simple to understand and manage.
